What Is This Country Coming To.

Everything written in this blog today are my personal thoughts and opinions

Where is the future of our Country headed? First question we need to ask ourselves is "When did the roles reverse between parents and children?"

We have kids running the streets doing what they want, when they want, and parents too afraid to discipline them. I cannot believe that we have arrived at a point that parents are afraid of their children. If your child is acting out, and completely out of control, there are programs to help you and your family cope with this type of situation. Learn more

I am glad to see that graduation rates are at an all-time high across the country. Despite everything students must deal with these days, the list below is only part of the problem plaguing our country. I give kudos to the kids that continue to succeed even though they continue to deal with these issues.

  • Bullying

  • Depression

  • Mental Health

On the other end of the spectrum we have kids that cannot deal with the issues above, most children rather not attend school than go and be "Bullied." How can we have our children afraid of school? What are the available options? A program families must pay out of pocket for, is there a free program? maybe having the schools do more to protect the students. The question is? Is enough being done to help these kids. (The link above has information for varies topics regarding the above issues.)

But, other than bullying a good part of it is medical, but most of these issues can be dealt with at home. I'm sorry to say, but we must realize that discipline towards children has really changed through the years, “Time out” what exactly is time out? Is this action supposed to discipline a child? I remember when a teacher would send me to the corner for doing something wrong, and for me that was just an opportunity to practice my thumb wrestling. What lesson did I learn? Absolutely nothing.

And yes, I remember the barbaric way most children were disciplined in the past “I was one of them.” I remember “Racetrack strips,” “Electric Cords,” and “Switches” Being used on us. But do you know? It might have been "Barbaric", but it worked. And you would have never caught us running around causing trouble or doing the things like the kids today. Now mind you, I'm talking about being disciplined for good reason, not just because parents felt like beating their child, and those parents.... Well, let me stop right there before I say something wrong.

I remember as a child if your mother was not available because of work or what not, every mother in the neighborhood became your mother "Some of you remember that." Believe me if you did something wrong, any of the neighbor “Moms” would jump right in there and take care of it. Then when your mother got home, she would get the full details of the incident, they left nothing out. “We had no chance to get away with anything!

But then again those were the good old days when neighbors trusted each other. Mothers did not have to worry about their children as much, why? Because they knew their child was cared for by other parents. And us as children loved it, because we knew no matter what; we had someone or somewhere to go if necessary.

Did we as children have to worry about being abducted back then? The answer is “No”, you ask why? Well like I said before we were watched over, we were able to go three or four blocks from our house in any direction, and still have your friend’s mother or father asking, “Does your mom know your over here?” It was comforting knowing you were cared for.

These days children cannot walk 20 feet from their driveway without being yelled at by a parent not to go too far, is this really the world we want to live in? Or can it be changed? I think it can be if people come together like they did back in the day.

Even gangs back in the 80’s had respect for the community. If they saw a person coming up the sidewalk they would move to the side, if they saw a person struggling to carry something they would offer to help, not like the "punks" today they have no respect for anyone not even the authorities.

This country has a lot of issues to deal with, and honestly the biggest problem are the people. I must admit there are a lot of people out there that care and try to help, and I applaud them for that. But we also have people that care for nothing or only themselves. And that's a darn shame, because one day those people that do not care for others are going to need help.

Will we help them? of course we would that the kind of people we are. Plus, deep down inside we all have that one dream, that someday this country will fix itself, and everything will be right in this world.

Thank you

Daniel Marrero.
